romantic dinner for one.

I’d like to propose something that everyone should do: date yourself.

Regardless of whether you’re single or not, date yourself. Wear a new dress, apply some mascara and settle in to see a movie where you won’t have to share the popcorn.

It can be a little daunting the first time. You might feel like you need company to enjoy a movie, or to dine at a restaurant, or to marvel at an art exhibition. And it is nice to have someone to laugh alongside, or to steal potato chips from their plate. But, sometimes it’s nice to just enjoy your own company.

Too many times have I felt the urge to be out and about, exploring my city or appreciating some art, but everyone else is busy. I have gazed at the colourful dresses hanging in my closet, wishing I had a reason to not spend another afternoon lounging in my pajamas. Too many times I have anticipated seeing a foreign, subtitled film and decided that dragging along that friend who prefers blockbusters wouldn’t be the best idea… Solution: date yourself.

The first date I took myself on started with a little embarrassment. I slunk into the dark cinema, quickly choosing a seat just in time for the trailers to begin. Two hours and one phenomenal film later, I was so grateful that I could just let it all sink in. No need to discuss plot holes or character motivations. No need to debate whether it was pretentious or perfect. No need to talk. Just the opportunity to let it linger a little longer.

And as I walked myself home, listening to the tranquil strains of Sigur Ros on my iPod and admiring the city sights surrounding me, I felt content. That night, my own company was all I needed.

“Hayley,” I told myself, “I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship”.
